Kenneth Hudson Award given to ENM
The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA), organised by the European Museum Forum (EMF), was presented on 12 May, at the 2018 award ceremony held in Warsaw. The European Museum of the Year Award 2018 was given to Desing Museum in London. The Kenneth Hudson Award was awarded to the Estonian National Museum.
Jose Gameiro, head of the EMYA's jury and a member of the EMF's Board of Trustees explained at the award ceremony, that „This museum provides a thoughtful exploration of what belonging to a place means, so that it collects, preserves and interprets memories of the past in ways which make the museum an inclusive, creative learning environment for all. This museum considers and deals with complex and controversial histories and views its main responsibility as collecting and preserving memory to create a new vision of cultural dialogue which links past with future. By taking a dialogic multi-vocal, participatory approach to the history of everyday life, the museum reinvents the traditional concept of a national museum.“
“The Kenneth Hudson Award is one of the most important prizes in the museum field in Europe that is given to projects and museums that put people on the foreground and communicate with people. This has also been one of the most important principles while renewing ENM. The main goal of the renewal process of ENM has been bringing the national museum of Estonia to the 21st century. On Saturday we were assured that we are on the right course," said the director of ENM, Alar Karis.
Karis added that the award is an acknowledgement both to ENM and Estonia. "Our national museum is a nationally unique and modern museum that has been brought as an example to the European museums. This award is also a token of trust and puts additional responsibility to the museum whilst continuing its course of development," he added.
The Kenneth Hudson Award is a museum award in Europe for the most unusual and daring achievement that challenges common perceptions of the role of museums in society. The award is presented each year since 2010 by the EMF under the auspices of the Council of Europe. The winner is selected by the Board of Trustees of EMF. The award is a tribute to British journalist, anti-museologist, broadcaster and book author Kenneth Hudson.
The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA), founded in 1977, is the longest running and most prestigious museum award in Europe, presented each year by the European Museum Forum (EMF) under the auspices of the Council of Europe. Museums in 47 European countries, all members of the Council of Europe, can take part in the competition if they are newly opened or have undergone modernization or expansion in the past two years. This year, the award winners were selected from 40 nominees.
