Tartu Peace Treaty Anniversary week opens at the Estonian National Museum on 30 January, when the original copy of the treaty arrives at the permanent exhibition “Encounters”.
Visitors can view the treaty and browse its full text on the screen in the “The People and the State” room until 2 February. After that, the document, which ended the 431-day Estonian War of Independence, returns to its place of storage at the National Archives of Estonia.
In order to mark the special event, the first flag of a volunteer unit that fought on the southern front of the war – the Sakala Partisan Regiment – has been brought out of the museum’s flag collection and shown in the exhibition hall. It is displayed next to a Cross of Liberty medal that belonged to Anna Vares. Vares went to the war as a volunteer at 18 and is one of the two Estonian women who received a medal of honour.
The anniversary celebrations include the issue of a thematic postage stamp and a coin. The Bank of Estonia will present the Tartu Peace Treaty 100 two-euro commemorative coin on 1 February at the Estonian National Museum. The museum will also host several conferences: the International Conference on Cyber Law and the Tartu Peace Treaty Conference on Foreign Policy.
The detailed programme of the anniversary events can be found on the website of the city of Tartu.
