When the summer heat is perhaps too much and the sun tends to burn, museums are the ones that attract. The Estonian National Museum, located only two kilometers from the center of Tartu, invites you to hide from the hot weather and explore the exhibitions from Tuesday to Sunday.
In the summer of 2023, the following exhibitions will be open at ENM:
- The permanent exhibition "Echo of the Urals" provides answers to fascinating questions about the cultural and intellectual connections, languages and genes of the Finno-Ugric peoples.
- The second permanent exhibition "Encounters" tells the stories of ordinary Estonian people who have lived in our country throughout the ages.
- The open storage exhibition "Practical beauty" presents nearly 1,500 historical accessories, from purses and handbags to study pockets and stomach bags. The display shows the rich sense of beauty of our ancestors and is a great inspiration for all folk culture and design enthusiasts.
- The exhibition of souvenir scarfs presents souvenir scarfs of song parties, Olympic games, festivals and other events, cities and institutions, which were valued accessories in the 20th century.
- The exhibition "Right body, wrong body?", however, sheds light on the cultural meanings of the body in Estonia: which body is beautiful, which one was born? What foods are good for the body and what are not? What kind of physical characteristics does the country need for its citizens?
- The rich and versatile world of Estonian farm chairs is introduced, the exhibition of country chairs with more than 100 unique chairs tells about the manufacture of chairs and the values that its maker considered important. The oldest exhibited chairs date from the second half of the 18th century. NB! Closed from 14th July until 23rd of July 2023.
- This time, the exhibition "Life through the matrix" in the participation hall shows the wonderful world of string art through the works of Estonian artists.
Announcement! During Rally Estonia 20.-22. July ENM's exhibition and restaurant are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There is a rally park at the B-parking lot of the ENM open for every visitor.
The museum is not just exhibitions!
In ERM, the restaurant Pööripäev is open during the opening hours of the museum, where there is a large selection of cakes and where, among other things, lunch is served from 12 to 3 p.m.The museum shop is also open six days a week: the selection includes Estonian handicrafts and design, souvenirs and prints. The museum's e-shop is open 24/7 at https://www.erm.ee/et/pood.
The ERM library can be used locally by anyone interested; Here you can find literature on the ethnology, folk customs, religion, folk art and cultural history of Estonians and other Finno-Ugric peoples. And a representative list of ordered periodicals. The library is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.
Great viewing and great events can also be found in the museum yard
The surroundings of the ERM are also nice in the summer: 16 sculptures are exhibited in the Raadi manor park, ten of which are by Anton Starkopf, one of the founders of the Pallas Art School, a long-time teacher and director. His portrait of Konrad Mägi, the most famous painter in Estonian art history, is also on display. There is also a water tower from the 19th century in the park, which introduces the Raadi area on the border of the city of Tartu and the municipality.
Visiting game Forgotten Manors comes to the Raadi manor park in July and August, and those interested can take part in both tours and an orientation game. Of course, the museum's theme park and the Raadi manor park are places where you can simply take a walk, exercise on the village swing and, if you wish, have a picnic.
The ERM Heimtal Museum is located nearly 90 kilometers from the ERM. This summer, until June 20, there is a special reason to visit Heimtal: the large carpet exhibition opened for Anu Raua's anniversary in the Heimtal Manor's ring stable is really only open for half of the summer.
ERM for children
Depending on the age of the children, there are many things to enjoy in the museum. The little ones especially enjoy playing around on the spacious bridge area, eating ice cream in the restaurant and are mostly excited about the mystery of the "Echo of the Urals". The action hall in the middle of the permanent exhibition "Encounters" is also interesting: with the help of parents, you can compare historical events in Estonia and the rest of the world, and you can put your hands on them and see what the cupboards hide.
