Estonia’s biggest museum stands with Ukraine in thought, word and deed. The Estonian National Museum (ENM) is supporting Ukrainian refugees arriving in Estonia and helping to raise donations to guarantee the provision of humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
The museum’s permanent exhibition ‘Encounters’ is now home to a special display entitled Слава Україні! or ‘Glory to Ukraine!’, showcasing Ukrainian items from the collections of the ENM. Many of the items have great personal meaning attached to them, such as the duck-shaped container that belonged to Crimean-born Pauliine Allikas and a range of beautifully painted and adorned Easter eggs. Everyday items from Ukraine are also displayed.
The exhibitions ‘Friend of Ukraine’ and ‘Be Prepared!’, which have been complied of stories sent by Estonian people, are open until 5 March. The exhibition ‘Friend of Ukraine’ focuses on the experiences of the people who have helped the Ukrainians who arrived in Estonia as war refugees. The exhibition ‘Be Prepared!’ showcases stories of how to behave and survive in crises.
Visitors to the museum can contribute to the provision of humanitarian aid in Ukraine in a number of ways: Everyone who donates at least €5 gets a honey cake in the restaurant and the donation is passed on to the Slava Ukraini initiative. The museum’s shop and information desk will be giving everyone who makes a donation at the museum a ribbon in Ukrainian colours.
Access to the museum’s exhibitions is free of charge for Ukrainian refugees, for whom museum staff will be happy to organise tours and cultural programmes. The museum also plans to organise more children’s camps in Ukrainian in spring. The museum building is also being made available for events and gatherings for the Ukrainian community: The ENM will not only provide space but also technical assistance to organisers of events designed to support Ukraine and Ukrainians either directly or via the money raised from them.
Glory to Ukraine!
