Opened in 2016, the Estonian National Museum (ERM) is an immense facility just outside the centre of Tartu that serves as both the country's primary history museum and a cutting-edge culture/event center. The museum provides a comprehensive showcase of Estonia's ethnographic history, displaying a large number of high-tech installations as well as artefacts from the 107-year-old institution's collection. It is strongly recommended that event planners leave at least 1-2 hours in their schedules for guided tours of the permanent exhibitions.
The building itself is unique in design and scale. Created by Paris-based architecture firm DGT, the award-winning structure covers an area of 33,876 square meters, with a full 6,134 square meters dedicated to exhibition space. The museum sits on a 40-hectare plot of land that was originally the site of a Baltic-German manor and later served as a Soviet air base.
