Come and discover Estonian culture and Tartu!
Would you like to know more about Estonian culture, to share your thoughts about how similar or different it is compared to your culture, and to visit interesting cultural places in Tartu and meet new people? Maybe you have been thinking that you would like to explore Estonian National Museum, but the ticket is a bit expensive? Or perhaps you want to go to a concert but going alone is not fun?If yes, here is your chance: Estonian National Museum and its Friends Society invite you to a culture course that takes place in five study days between October 28 and November 11, is free of charge and gives you the opportunity to discover Tartu and Estonia!
The course is primarly meant for the adults (and younger participants at least the age of 15) who are born in Estonia, have lived here for a longer time, or have just recently arrived.
During the course we will talk about Estonian history, cultural symbols, nature, traditions and many more. On the basis of some influential books and films we will compare the lives of the Estonians 150, 100 and 50 years ago. We will discuss what is easy or difficult while moving between different cultures - you can share your thoughts and hear about the experiences of others.
In addition to getting an insight into the culture, you´ll expand your network and discover cultural places in Tartu. The course is designed to be interactive and dynamic. The participants who attend at least 80% of the course, will get the certificate.

The course is developed by the educational center of Estonian National Museum in cooperation of the team of semioticians from the University of Tartu. The activities are supported by the ENM Friends Society. The program is funded by Integration Foundation through ESF.
Programme of the Culture Course
Wednesday, October 28, 5.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. Who or what is an Estonian? We will talk about the history and people of Estonia, giving a brief look to economy, education and science, religion and changes in the culture.
Saturday, October 31, 12 p.m. - 15 p.m. Let’s explore the language! We will talk about the languages in general and the Estonian in particular. We will also discuss our own experiences in studying languages, and explore the exhibition „Language Brew“.
Wednesday, November 4, 5.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. Are the Estonians a people of Nature? We will walk in the nature, talk about the Estonians’ relations with the environment, get to know the traditional folk calender and taste the genuine Estonian food.
Saturday, November 7, 12 p.m. – 15 p.m. From runo song to pop music. We will focus on the Estonian music from different periods and sing in an old traditional way.
Wednesday, November 11, 5.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. Mental milestones. We will talk about different cultures and the phenomena which have symbolic value in the Estonian culture.
NB! We definitely take into account the wishes and needs of every group which we will discuss in our first meeting. The precise topics of the study trips will be settled in accordance of the interest of the participants.
Deadline of the registration is 26th of October. If the group does not fill, the course will be canceled. You will be then informed by e-mail on 27th of October .
