Given that over 70 million people around the world claim Irish heritage, it is no surprise that Ireland’s national day has become a global celebration. For the past decade, hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world have been illuminated in green on March 17 as part of the “Global Greenings”, one of the best representations of the worldwide reach of St. Patrick’s Day. From the Sydney Opera House to Tallinn’s TV Tower, Theatre Vanemuine Tartu Kaarsild Bridge, Raadi urban culture area with Estonian National Museum etc and everything in between, countries on every continent are proud to show their “Global Greenings”.
The initiative began in 2010. It helped to brighten cities and countries across the globe and to connect with those who held a special place in their heart for Ireland. In 2020, over 300 monuments in more than 40 countries were “greened” in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, including a record number of landmarks across Estonia. The 2020 “greenings” served as a reminder for Irish people everywhere, when it was not possible to travel home to be with friends and family, that we were still connected. They served as a light in a dark time and as we look ahead to 2021 and beyond, we look forward to a brighter time and even more “greenings”!
The Global Greening photo exhibition is open in the ENM, which is currently closed to guests. When the doors of the ENM are open again, there is hope that the exhibition can still be explored.
Many thanks for co-operation Irish Embassy, Tallinn.
