This exhibition is open in the Estonian National Museum gallery from 1 October 2022-15 January 2023.
The ‘Burning Man – Peeter Mudist’ exhibition marks what would have been the unique Estonian artist’s 80th birthday. While his paintings are known to many, his sculptures are less well known, despite being equally impressive. The exhibition showcases almost 60 paintings and 20 sculptures. The works, which depict people of importance to the artist, were primarily sourced from the collections of Estonia’s two biggest art museums and the most extensive private collection of Mudist’s paintings. The accompanying texts were penned by Mudist himself.
Peeter Mudist was, and remains, one of the true legends of Estonian art. His works have always been greatly admired among art-lovers. He had developed his characteristic painting style by the early 1970s, only a few years after graduating from what is now the Estonian Academy of Arts. The style differed markedly from everything else that was being done in painting at the time. He had the resolve to stand out, and this granted him extraordinary freedom as an artist. It is possible that this was also influenced by the Parkinson’s disease he suffered for half his life, which only gave him time to focus on what was most important to him. That is why the exhibition is entitled ‘Burning Man’.
The exhibition was curated by Reet Mark and designed by Emma Eensalu.
The Estonian National Museum is open from 10:00-18:00 Tuesday-Sunday.
Access is via entrance A.
