i-Game – Co-Creation of Games
HORIZON-RIA Project Duration: 2024–2026Project Participants from ERM: Pille Runnel, Agnes Aljas
Estonian National Museum is participating in the Horizon Europe project „i-Game – Building a community for the co-creation of games with high impact on innovation, sustainability, social cohesion and growth“.
Games play an important role in our daily lives, allowing us to learn and experience the world. The gaming industry is one of the most rapidly developing and significant sectors in the global economy, opening up new opportunities for innovation in the museum field. Why are there so few games based on cultural heritage? Why do museums often struggle with game design? The i-Game project seeks answers to these questions.
The project aims to support memory institutions and analyze ways to strengthen the connection between heritage and game design. Museum collections are more accessible than ever before; for example, digital collections from Estonian museums are available at the online portal www.muis.ee. How could the gaming industry utilize open-access digital collections from memory institutions? How could museums, in collaboration with their communities, design meaningful game-based solutions? The project will create a platform that fosters greater synergy between museums, communities, and the game design field. A key aspect of the project is for partners to learn from each other.
The consortium for this interdisciplinary project consists of representatives from technology, business, and cultural fields, with ERM responsible for museum and cultural sector research and pilot testing on the platform. The project coordinators are Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) and Business and Cultural Development Centre (KEPA), partners Raising the Floor, Cookie Box Group Gamification & Serious Game, Nurogames GmbH, KU Leuven, Unisystems Luxembourg, Open Impact, Museospace, Prato Textile Museum and Estonian National Museum.
