Green Museum
The Estonian National Museum (ENM) gained a Green Museum Certificate in 2023, awarded in Estonia to museums that value sustainability and work to reduce their environmental impact.ENM Green Museum principles
- Climate change is one of today's biggest challenges, and it is everyone's social responsibility to deal with it.
- The mission of the museum is to value and protect the natural and cultural environment and to support individual and community awareness on the topic through its activities.
- The ENM's development plan includes a set of goals aimed at sustainable operation and a reduction in the Museum’s environmental impact. The museum is accessible and inclusive both mentally, cognitively, digitally and physically.
- Environmentally sustainable operation will make the Museum more efficient, reduce costs, and set an example for others.
- We have two lines of action to address the challenges of sustainability, climate change and biodiversity:
Reducing the ENM’s environmental impact
The Museum will:- Aim to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment and plan a transition to renewable energy in cooperation with RKAS.
- Consider important, in the planning of activities and innovative actions, environmental influence and biodiversity.
- Prefer services and products with a lower environmental impact and consider their long-term and indirect environmental effects.
- Avoid unnecessary consumption of electricity and heat energy. Use water and other resources efficiently and plan our transport use wisely.
- Avoid generating unnecessary waste. We separate waste in the public areas of the museum and in work spaces.
- Consider recycling and the principles of circular economy important, and use products to the end of their lifecycles.
- Be aware of digital waste and the impact of the Museum’s digital footprint.
- Follow our own guidelines for sustainable exhibitions and events.
Social responsibility
The Museum:- Has a social responsibility for the future, its collections and its audiences.
- Supports visitors’ environmental awareness and direct their attention to the topic.
- Considers it important that our collections and knowledge are of value to future generations. We support this through visitor- and user-centred solutions, based on museum knowledge and collections.
- Considers the principles of collection preservation paramount.
- Plans its work long-term, systematically and sustainably, taking care of the mental and physical health of our employees.
- Organises training and events aimed at increasing ENM employees' awareness of sustainability.
- Follows its own guidelines for sustainable working.
The ENM's environmental principles are in accordance with its statutes and development plan. These principles are based on the Estonia 2035 strategy, the Faro Convention, ICOM's International Museum Ethics and the UN's sustainable development goals.
The ENM has a green museum working group which reviews the museum's activity plan annually.
